Baby Bennett

Our dear friends just entered the realm of parenthood when they welcomed baby bennett into this world. We are thrilled for them and this new adventure they are beginning.

Bennett is such a cutie, yet he doesn't seem to be a big fan of photo shoots thus far (but we'll change that soon enough). I've never heard a baby snore until now, but let me tell you it is the cutest thing ever!

My children are smitten with this kid, too. It will be exciting to watch them grow up together.

Pickin' Pumkpins

The pumpkin patch near our home has been upgrading it's features every year and I think this year was the best yet. They had a petting zoo, a maze, a hay bale tower, hay rides and a corn pit.

Natalie loved the corn, especially sticking it in her ears! Every time I turned around she was trying to stuff more in her ears. She even tried to stuff some in Kai's ears when he was buried. Kai also liked climbing the tower.

Trying to get pictures of my own three kids is so hard. Here are my best attempts: on the hay ride, in the corn, and out in the field. Kai with his pumpkin.

Fish Lake Camping Trip - Film Photographer

Jeremy was dying to take our family camping this summer, he did most of the preparation and packing and we were off to Fish Lake. It was so beautiful there, the lake had a nice trail around it so we went on lots of bike rides, tried to fish, played games, and ate camp food. Overall it was fun, but it did have it's bad moments, and we almost came home early!

On the first day we went for a bike ride by the lake in the hot sun. Well, I got fried, not just sun burned, fried. Crispy! We roasted marshmallows that night with the kids and used up our firewood, planning to buy more the next day. After we tucked the kids in bed, my burn was getting painful and I was very cold! Jeremy and I stayed up for a bit and then went to bed ourselves. We tossed and turned for a few hours, we were up at 9,000 feet and it was cold, and we were sunburned, and even more cold. It was freezing! I have never felt so cold in all my life. As much as we tried, neither one of us could sleep.

We tried cuddling to share body heat, and I fell asleep for about 30 minutes. However, I was stealing all of Jeremy's body heat so that didn't work out either. Finally, at 2:30 am we decided we could just go out and make a fire to get warm.

We got out of the tent and remembered we didn't have any fire wood left. I suggested we steal some from sleeping campers! haha Jeremy suggested foraging for sage brush. So he foraged, over and over, every 15 minutes until the sun warmed us all up at about 8am! We just sat by the fire all night long, no sleep, at all! We were ready to cook breakfast at 4am. We decided to at least wait until the kids woke up at 6:30am. It was one of the longest nights of my life, I was Done camping! I wanted to go home or to the nearest hotel and sleep!

Jeremy took the kids back into town to gather supplies: aloe, a new sleeping bag for me to use, ponchos, and firewood! I got to sleep. When Jeremy got back he took a nap too. We decided to stay.

We went and took a shower that day to refresh, and went on another bike ride. It rained that night and put the entire camp to bed early that night. It was nice and quiet, dark, and warmer from the cloud cover, and we were exhausted. We slept great that night.

Our last day we went to the lake and tried to fish. We caught nothing in the 30 minutes we tried, while the people next to us caught about 25 fish! It was a little sad. Then we packed up camp and drove back home to our nice warm beds! : )

I wish we had a real beach here in Utah, I told my husband I was going to Lakeshore Beach and he just laughed and laughed. He said no one has ever called it that before and questioned my judgement. After viewing the results though, he told me that no one has ever made "Lakeshore Beach" look more beautiful! haha

Meet the Bennion family, the sweetest little family of 3 ever. It was a super hot, bright sunny day at the beach that day, but we had a lot of fun anyway. Baby Claire was a trooper, it was 90 degrees outside, and she stayed happy through most of our session!

This is where Jeremy grew up, surrounded by beautiful mountains and fields. He went to help his family haul hay yesterday and I wanted to document some of it. Their land, and their town, is so beautiful. you would have to see it to believe it. Our friends call it the promised land, it is that breathtaking!

Jeremy's grandpa is driving the tractor, he's 91! Once a farmer, always a farmer! He reminds me a lot of my grandpa. We have a few treasured photographs of him on his tractor, and I wanted to give a similar treasure to the Nelson family. Happy early Father's Day!

Pictures for My Walls

I haven't taken some of my own advice about printing pictures and actually hanging them up! I always try and direct clients to purchase at least one large print to hang on their wall so they are sure to actually hang one up. Everyone wants digital files, and they are great to have. But most of us buy a disc, maybe do a blog post, and then forget about the pictures, never hanging any on the wall or printing any.

Take these for example - we had these done last July, one year ago people! I don't have a single image hanging on the walls! I printed a few wallets and 4x6's for family, but no large pictures for our walls. Well, I am printing them now, BIG! I'm replacing older pictures (ones without Nicole). Let's hope I can get another updated one on the wall before July of next year!!

Longview Fiber Open House - Spanish Fork

Two weeks ago today, I had the pleasure of photographing a historic event! Longview Fiber, here in Spanish Fork, hosted an open house for its employees, the first one ever! It was a very successful event. They had safety kits for the kids and employees, face painting, balloons, factory tours, and a delicious lunch from Apple Spice Junction. They also had the fire department involved and kids could dress up as a fireman and climb in a firetruck and an ambulance. I can't wait to be a part of next year's open house! I had so much fun photographing my four- legged friends! Meet Maggie and Lucy, the most adorable dogs I know. It's been a long time since I've photographed animals, but I still enjoy it. More Temple Square - Family Day

After conference, Jeremy and I planned a day to take the kids up to Temple Square to show them all the sites and to take pictures of them. We want to print some of them with the temple in the background to hang in their rooms. I think this will mean more to them than just a picture sitting there.

When we got home we opened our wedding album and showed them that we had taken pictures in all the same spots mom and dad had pictures when we were married. They wondered why they weren't in the pictures, but we told them they were watching from heaven! It was such a fun day and brought up a lot of great discussions with the kids. It also really made me want another little one!

2nd Shooting Experience

I offered to come help my cousin Lindsey shoot a wedding and she graciously agreed. This couple had no experience with me, but I hope by the end of the evening I gained their confidence and friendship!

Meet Spencer & Natalie, a lovely couple with great taste in colors and style! : )

The sun opened up for these two; it was supposed to be cold and rainy, however, nothing but sunshine would do for their day!

Being a second shooter means not always getting the best angle; trying to think of creative ways to cover the action, and always being on guard for small moments around the main couple. Like this: Lindsey & Kale Fitch doing their thing! It also means that the day is complete bliss not being the one under pressure! haha

This was the first time I had worked with Kale, he is pure genius! If you need a videographer for your wedding, hire him!

The reception was held at the beautiful Cactus & Tropical in Draper, such beautiful natural light and decor there.

Now I can't wait to get my film back, too!

This was another favorite island of ours, so beautiful and full of pirate history. To get to any of the beaches you had to drive up and over the mountains. This is a grab shot out the window on the way to a different beach.

Once we got to our destination: Cane Garden Bay, Jeremy and I took a walk to photograph the detailed and brightly colored buildings.

The sun was in and out of the clouds all afternoon, but it was still warm and peaceful there.

Later that night we caught a show, played a crazy game of spoons (I'm sure people thought we were drunk), went to the chocolate buffet, and went to another late show. That was our busiest day on the ship! Here we are on our floating home.

St. Thomas - below the water

So these aren't my pictures, we bought the professional pictures and videos taken by the diver. Normally I would have taken my own, but we forgot our underwater cameras in our room that morning. Of all the days to forget. haha Our options were to pay $25 for a cheap camera or buy their picture package. I'm glad we did, all the images are HDR and so clear. Plus, we got to just enjoy the experience knowing someone else was documenting it. I have to be honest, we didn't even see half of the creatures the diver did, but we did see quite a few and we got to hold a lot of little sea creatures, too which was awesome.

This was a unique experience, a once in lifetime. You do a short training about the helmets and what to expect, but both Jeremy and I were still terrified before going in the water. The helmets weigh 75 lbs to keep you on the ocean floor, and they place it on your head on a ladder when you are neck deep in and help you down the ladder. Once down, there is a chain fence along the path to hold on to; without it we would have been swept away in the current. It took a while to get used to walking with the helmet on and figuring out how to look out of it. If you wanted to see something you had to turn your whole body and look straight out the front or everything was really distorted. A few times I reached out to touch a fish only to find I was way off.

You also can't look down, so I tripped a few times at first. Along the way Jeremy and I both had something cross our ankles, whatever it was left a big scratch on my ankle. It was pretty creepy, maybe it was this friendly looking fellow below??! : )

It was a really cool adventure, we were so glad we did it. The kids loved looking at the pictures of us in our helmets, and watching video of it, so I guess the extra cost was worth it in the end. If you're ever in St. Thomas, go check it out!

St. Thomas - above the water

St. Thomas was our second port of call on the cruise, the day after Samana. We were delivered right into a tourist trap in St. Thomas and I wasn't thrilled. Nothing authentic to photograph in any direction, but I did get a few nice shots of the harbor from our ship. These are all digital pictures since we had an under water excursion planned that afternnon.

*Coral World at Coki Beach. Debbie and Steve went snorkeling at the beach while we did a helmet dive in that hut. *Before our dive we got to tour the park for a while, meet mr. shark. * Me petting mr. shark, he felt like sandpaper! * Me petting the friendly starfish. * Me getting attacked by a nasty bird. Yeah, I like animal life, but sometimes, they don't like me! haha * The crew station. This little place caters to the asian workers on the ships, they can use the internet, make phone calls, and buy food they eat at home. Our waitress at breakfast was so excited to get off the ship and spend her day here. * This picture makes me laugh! This is supposed to be a postcard set up where you zoom in and take your picture, well, you never know what you'll get handing your camera off to a stranger! *Aboard the ship after our day on the island, ready for dinner. *Dinner at the mexican restaurant on board (thanks guys). We had a very messy meal, Jeremy dropped a rib right into his glass, Steve spilled salsa on the table. We special ordered dessert and when the head waiter saw the state of our table he wouldn't even lay down silver ware until someone came to clean it. I could get used to that level of service, we were so spoiled on the ship!

Speaking of spoiled...I guess that is a good time to add that Jeremy and I bought a week pass to the spa. It was heaven!! There were jacuzzis, saunas, a therapy pool, and hot stone lounge chairs. Worth every penny for relaxation!!

At Coral world. There were iguanas everywhere!! They were like seagulls here, they would sneak up to people and try to steal and beg for food. We saw one eating a napkin.

This was a grab shot on the way back to the tourist trap. Some glimpse of real life here. I loved the school uniforms.

Another grab shot, some guy slicing a fish for sale on the side of the road. St. Thomas ended up being my least favorite stop. From the parts we saw, it was just like being here in the US, only dirtier and more run down. Good thing we had an awesome dive experience!

Natalie's Butterfly Party

This was Natalie's reward party. She wanted a butterfly theme, so we spent that morning cutting out paper butterflies. We invited everyone over in dress up clothes and had snacks and cake. Then we played Elefun and had a dance party! Natalie also wanted to put makeup on so we did that and had a fashion show with a photshoot. Lastly, the girls got to play mom and dad and went home with a balloon.

It was a fun party and I had so many cute pictures it was hard to narrow them down. Parents, if you want these, just send me an e-mail!

Kai's Reward Party

We promised all the kids they could have a party if they were good while we were gone on our cruise. The bribe included things like doing homework, not crying and whining, and being happy at other people's houses. Well the reports were all good, so this week we threw Kai and the girls their parties.

Kai wanted a Star wars Party; he invited friends over after school for pizza and a Star Wars movie. They didn't know a surprise guest was coming though...

We also invited a special stormtrooper to the party. wink wink It was awesome, the kids loved it! I don't know how we'll ever top this at another party, but it was sure fun. Yes, his vest is on backwards, we think he was just in a big hurry to get to the party before it was over! ; )

Samana

Samana, in the Dominican Republic, was our first port of call on the cruise. I loved this place, my favorite stop of the whole cruise for sure. I would love to travel back here some day and just spend a few days on this island.

We chose a speedboat excursion and got to cruise around the coast at high speeds. We stopped at Cayo Levantado for lunch then had to race back to catch the last tender boat. Our excursion took a lot longer than we thought it would, for a few reasons. First, no one on that island cares about time! haha Second, Steve and Debbie had some issues with their boat breaking down twice, once in the middle of the ocean where they had to switch boats with our captains. It took so much time that our guides felt they owed us all extra time cruising around.

Once we stopped for lunch we didn't know what to expect. The meals were cooked from scratch, it took about 45 minutes to get our food, and there was a lot of it. It was great food, but we spent all our cash on lunch and didn't have any left for shopping, which was so sad. I loved all their hand made jewelry, it was all so beautiful! We did manage to barter a small bracelet for $4, so at least we have something to remember. : )

One of the reasons I loved this place so much; It was sad to see these poor dogs everywhere, but it's just one example of how authentic and natural the island still is. It is not touristy or commercialized.

Caribbean Cruise Part 1

We began our journey flying into into Ft. Lauderdale (since it was so much cheaper than flying to Miami) with our friends Steve and Debbie. We spent the night there in Ft. Lauderdale and had dinner at a fabulous Cuban place: Padrinos.

I was a little skeptical at first, nothing on the menu seemed tasteful. It seemed like they took everything you wouldn't want to eat and tossed it all together. Example: everything had loads of onion, beef or dark meat chicken or liver, potatoes, and more onion! I was wrong though; The food was so good, I don't even know how to describe it. Very flavorful, a mix between island, italian, and mexican?? If you haven't tried Cuban food, you should, it's awesome!

I had lamb in a red wine sauce, Jeremy got a skirt steak. We tried plantain chips with onion salsa, stuffed potatoes, a wonderful yam-like vegetable (can't remember the name), sweet plantains, black beans, and Debbie had stuffed chicken. Image taken from Jeremy's phone.

Sunday morning before boarding the ship we went for a walk and found this beautiful church (see we even went to church). : ) All the images below were taken with my Holga film camera.

We had a short drive to the Miami port and began our journey. The image on the left is actually from one of the last days at sea.

We had a party for Nicole a few days early since she turned two while we were on our cruise. When we dropped the kids off at Grandma and Grandpa's house we brought out cake, balloons and presents to have a little party. I think she had a great time.

We got home to find her saying a lot more words than when we left. She says I'm two, mommy, I see it, and more. She is also suddenly very interested in going potty. I'm hoping that will continue and that we can get our last baby out of diapers! ; )

A Beautiful Moment

There is beauty all around us if we look. I was taking Nicole's hair out of a style that had been in for about 4 weeks, and half way through I saw this, and had to take a picture. This is an experimental image with my Holga camera, but I love it.

My Girls, on Film

This is the first roll of 35mm I have taken in about 8 years! I used color film at ISO 400 or 800 (I can't remember). I don't get all the technical data written down for me like I do shooting digital. You can tell they are grainy, but it is real grain, not digitally added grain or yucky noise. There is a certain softness to film that I love, and you can't reproduce that any other way, other than to shoot with film.

I will be incorporating more film into my work with client sessions. I want to remaster this basic medium that started my love affair with photography!

These little cuties were so fun to photograph; so energetic and big personalities. You can see that anything goes in the studio, there are no rules, just play time! Mom did such a great job on their outfits, too. Bright colors look amazing here in the white studio!

People say that photographing pets and kids are the toughest specialties, and they're right, to a certain degree. You just have to know how to work with them. Photographing kids is like a step aerobics class, weight lifting, acting, juggling, and duck hunting all rolled into one (I'm usually sweating by the end). haha What the? Let me explain....I'm usually running around, getting down on the floor just to jump up a second later and run to get another shot, "flying" kids into their spot, making animal noises, acting like a clown, holding a camera and a puppet, changing lenses, etc, and then waiting for the perfect expression.
The final result is worth every part of it, don't you think?!

The Lovely Room

So here is the official reveal of the room! Nicole is now in a matching big girl bed like Natalie (now if we could get her to STAY in the bed).

It is a very small room with only one small window, so not much light or room to photograph, but you get the idea. I took two rolls of film, too. I can't wait to see how they turned out. For now here are some digital images.

Here's a family some of you might recognize; They were a joy to photograph. The children's outfits are from Scotland, isn't the kilt just the coolest thing ever? Her parents live in the Netherlands and were here visiting, so we did some family reunion shots as well.

Well, I wrapped up all my holiday photo orders for clients and had ONE available day to do pictures of my own children. The setting wasn't ideal (none of us slept the night before, kids were hungry and tired, yawning, pouting, you name it), but we rocked it out anyway. Literally, I tried to make it into a dance party to wake them up a little.

I will be posting more of these in the next few days.

I hope you are all enjoying this holiday season. I wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and give a special thank you to all my wonderful clients. It's been a great year getting to know you all. Meet another set of our lovely neighbors. I got to photograph them a few days ago in the beautiful fall leaves that are still hanging around. They are such a fun family and we love having them live nearby. Aren't they the cutest family ever?!

Bryan is a wood sculptor, too. He made all the drums in the images below. He also made that cute little elephant for our home! Jeremy travels to India and brought home some small carved elephants, so we asked Bryan to try his hand at a large, Indian inspired elephant, to go in our bedroom. I LOVE it! This has been a crazy week, with Halloween activities and the weather, but this photo shoot was worth the cold. I had so much fun with these three siblings. You may recognize the girl from some of my other shoots; this time I got to do her brothers, too!

Man it was cold... and snowing! Can you see it here? This snow blew in out of nowhere, but they didn't seem to mind.

I finally finished my re-finishing project! See that cute blue chair? I did that! I am so proud of myself.

I got to go photograph some preschool activities at the library the other day; I love kids this age, they are all so cute! Natalie was extra cute to me that day so I took extra of her. ; )

Natalie was trying to hide behind the leaf. Doesn't Nicole look like she's having a blast?! haha She gets to tag a long every once in a while.

My goofy girl, she loves to pull faces that I can't resist capturing. She won the battle with the shoes that morning. After trying hard to get her in a cute outfit and doing her hair, I gave up at the shoes. She is just as stubborn as her mommy!

It's funny how that happens with sessions, I go into it thinking a different set will be my favorite, and then I am surprised!

Fall Fashion Shoot - Part 1 - Utah Fashion Photographer

Here are a few images from my Fall Fashion Shoot last night. I had 7 gorgeous girls come to be models, and we had a blast! I haven't seen that much girl stuff in one house since my cheerleading days. My husband took the kids out with him all night and delivered pizza to us in the middle of the madness. He is so sweet, he just laughed and said our house had thrown up girl! haha Later he told the stylist that he didn't mind; that's what he signed up for when he married a photographer! I love him!!

I just updated my "about" section on the web, and on the "About" tab here on the blog as well. There aren't many business changes except my new Session Scheduling.

Welcome to my 3 ring circus! Well, it's only a circus now and then, but I do struggle with my balancing act everyday. These little cuties are my life and joy, and my greatest accomplishment. I am sincere in my effort to to be a mother first, and a photographer second, (although I love photography as much as my family, so some days this is extremely difficult). It is such a joy, and a challenge, to be mentally and physically available to my children when they really need me.

Because of this commitment, and because my children are so young, I am cutting back. Just for a few years! I will now pour my heart and soul into just TWO, carefully selected Sessions every month (which book quickly, I am usually booked 2-3 months out at a time).

Photography has been my life and passion for more than 12 years now. My brother bought me my first camera when I was 18; it was completely manual Penatx SLR that shot film! I've come a long way and learned a lot from that little camera. After years of trial, I now know that I love to create images of children that are either deliciously modern, or images that have vintage feel. I also relish in passionate teens, romantic women and dance. My images are simple, colorful, fun, and fresh.

In addition to my years of experience, I have been trained by the nation's greatest in every field; so you can count on exceptional results. I realize there are a lot of choices in this market today, and I don't take lightly my commitment to produce beautiful, personal, and timeless art for your home. With clothes! The newest Anthropologie collection is to die for! I love the photography, the location, the horses, and the clothes. This is how I would dress everyday if I could; and I would kill for the chance to shoot that catalogue.

Sigh, if only I were made of money.

Say Hello To My Little Friend

Meet Benjamin, our newest edition! He is a cute little thing, very mild mannered, and mellow. I think Benjamin will stick around for a few reasons:

*First, he is already house trained! He's had a few accidents, but is making progress quickly. And guess what, for the most part, he uses a litter box in the bathroom!!

*He's gone through most of the puppy chewing and training. He is 1, but so well behaved. We do need to get him fixed though.

*He sleeps with Kai and is Kai's little buddy.

* He hardly sheds, no one is allergic, and he needs little exercise. I took him on a walk to get Kai from school and he barely made it home. The school is about 6 blocks away! He came home and slept for 3 hours afterward, snoring loudly!

This little guy can JUMP HIGH, up to Jeremy's shoulders! He's 6' 1''. So I guess we can't leave food out on the table or counters.

He is great with the kids!! Hasn't jumped on Nicole once, and follows them all around the house.

Spanish Fork Youth Arts Festival - That's A Wrap

Teaching photography to kids is so much fun, and this year I had two classes full of amazing students. Thanks to all my students, and to all the parents for helping them take pictures outside of class. They had some really great images, I was impressed. Thank you also to the Arts committee, our classes were a huge success. Sorry to all those I missed at the showcase, I had to change my plans and run to get a root canal done. Personally, I would much rather have been at the show.

Thank you Brandi for bringing your cute kids to the youth arts festival so my students could get some practice with energetic kids. I'll get you these plus a few more soon. : )

Nicole had her hair corn rowed on saturday and it is too cute! So cute that she got more pictures of her that day than Natalie did, even though it was her birthday party. For all you adoptive moms out there, her name is Melissa and she works at Divas Salon in Payson, and she is awesome! She is my husband's cousin, so tell her hi for me if you go.

Nicole is growing up so much lately, she is always on the go and has a huge personality to match her energy and excitement. She will be the life of the party someday.

She has a t shirt that says, "everyone loves a brown- eyed girl." It's true, look at those eyes!

I needed to clear the kid's camera since they are sitting in on one of my classes and want to take pictures too. We bought it for Kai, but Natalie is the one carrying it around all the time snapping some serious close ups! It is a whopping 1 MP camera which leads to some stellar results.

If you're thinking, hey, that just looks like a jumbled mix of body parts... well then, you are absolutely right! I think they are very creative.

Natalie will make a good portrait photographer, she lined up all her stuffed animals, then lined up her games and her dolls, and......

There were many variations on this one!

I had the pleasure of photographing this family today, aren't they cutest family? I'm sorry we were low on time today, but don't worry at all, we got some great images!

This little baby has the most beautiful eyes ever and the sweetest grin to top it off.

This guy was fun, he cracked me up. I got other good shots of him, but this one made me laugh so I had to show it. I think he was getting tired of pictures.

Ok, let's hear it, awwwwwe! I Love this one.

Summer Sale! - Utah Photography Picture Sale, Special

I know my pricing was changed not too long ago. I thought by making a session all - inclusive it would be the best fit for my clients, making pictures as affordable as possible in this economy. But judging from the response I got from my rate change, I can see that wasn't the direction you wanted me to go. I am listening.

So.... I'm going back to basics. This summer (June -Aug) all sessions are $85! That is for my time and talent only; prints, and digital files can be purchased separately at the current print rates listed on the website.

Please leave some feedback in a comment to let me know if you like this method, or if you were one of the few who preferred the all - inclusive session.

Bahama Cruise Part 2

I am still wishing for some bright, hot sunshine here like we had on our cruise. We tried to get a lot of pictures of us on the cruise, but I didn't get very many other than that. It's hard to get authentic landscape or genuine people shots near the ship/ tourist ports and we didn't venture too far away from the boat. We came with a purpose, lay out and soak up as much sun as possible to make it through the rest of the long winter!

We tried shuffleboard, but had no idea what we were doing.

Our towel friends were pretty cute, too.

I can never get a straight face out of this kid, so I thought I'd give him a great opportunity to be silly!

Yeah, that's snow on the mountains, I'm a terrible mother. I did give him hot chocolate afterwards! And yes, those are girl panties, too, turns out I didn't even have any tidy whities for him to wear. This was mostly a test shoot for a commercial concept I want to shoot. I'll do it again when it's warmer, and I'll find some real boy underwear.

Natalie wanted to come to watch, but then asked me to take her picture, too. She just wanted to show me her flowers and wanted to know if there were any prettier ones. haha

This is what Kai was coerced into today. ; ) I'll post more soon. This is a shoot I've been wanting to do for a while, it was way too cold, so I may have him do it again on a warmer day.
